Starch Is Everywhere
Today 4th class learned about carbohydrates and about starch. Starch is in a lot of foods. Our teacher told us that if we add iodine to starch a chemical reaction will occur which will cause a blue or a blue black colour. Iodine is used as an indicator to see if starch is present in something.
Ms Glavin brought in some foods – white bread, brown bread, cooked rice, an apple, popcorn etc. We decided what items to test and some 4th class wanted to see what part of their lunch contained starch – Rebekah gave us a raspberry, Alex a grape, Zlata a piece of her biscuit etc.
We predicted which food item contains starch and we were right most of the time. The cooked pasta turned blue black much faster than the uncooked pasta.
