Our Board of Management

The Board manages the school on behalf of the Patron and is accountable to the Patron, Right Rev. Dr. Paul Colton, Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross and the Minister of Education and Skills.

The Principal is responsible for the day-to-day management of the school, including guidance and direction of the teachers and other staff of the school, and is accountable to the Board for that management.

The Patron arranges training for the Board of Management:

  1. The Board as a Corporate Entity – Function, Roles and the Board in action

  2. Procedures governing the appointment of staff in schools

  3. Board finances and the role of Treasurer

  4. Legal issues - policies and procedures arising from legislation, guidelines and circulars

  5. Child Protection Procedures

  6. Anti-Bullying Procedures

  7. Data Protection

 

The Board has a number of specific responsibilities in the management of the school:

  • to uphold the Church of Ireland ethos of the school

  • to recruit and dismiss teachers and other staff in accordance with the relevant procedures and requirements outlined in Department’s circulars and in other agreements between the Unions and Management Bodies

  • to enrol pupils in accordance with the school's Admissions Policy and in accordance with the Education (Admission to Schools) Bill which was published in April 2015. The objective of the Bill is to provide an over-arching framework to ensure that how schools decide on who is enrolled and who is refused a place in schools is structured, fair and transparent

  • the Board, from time to time, will be involved in developing, implementing and reviewing school policies, as appropriate

  • to be familiar with and ensure that the Child Protection Procedures for Primary and Post Primary Schools (issued under Circular 65/2011) are fully implemented by the school

  • to ensure that the school meets its obligations under the Education (Welfare) Act, 2000 to have in place a Code of Behaviour that has been drawn up in accordance with the guidelines of the National Educational Welfare Board (NEWB)

  • to ensure that the school has an Anti-Bullying Policy that fully complies with the requirements of the Department’s Anti-Bullying Procedures for Primary and PostPrimary Schools issued under Circular 0045/2013

  • to ensure the efficient use of school resources and government grants

  • to be cognisant of the importance of encouraging and facilitating the Principal and Deputy Principal and others in developing and effectively exercising this leadership role in the school

  • to arrange for the preparation of a School Plan, and to ensure that it is regularly reviewed and updated

  • to ensure ongoing evaluation and review of both the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the school and of the Board itself

  • to maintain the school grounds and building, ensuring the teaching and learning spaces are adequate for their purpose and to make provision for upgrades when necessary

  • to keep the school accounts in a clear and transparent and to arrange for annual certification by a qualified accountant​

  • to communicate regularly with the whole school and to liaise  with the Parent Association

 

The current Board of Management of Bandonbridge National School (2019 - 2023) began its work on the 1st December 2019. All the Board members attended an information session on the roles and responsibility of the Board of Management as a corporate entity. We are currently in the process of forming a new Board of Management which will take up its role on December 1st 2023.
